I read a lot as a little kid and I loved a lot of characters, but the first character I remember wishing was real so he could be my boyfriend was Walter Cuthbert Blythe, the son of Anne of Green Gables, in the book Rilla of Ingleside. Walter is an introvert, a dreamer and a poet, always disappearing to go work on his sonnets.
Walter does not want to serve in World War I, but someone mails him a white feather at school (an anonymous taunt of cowardice), and he decides he has to do the honorable. He perishes in battle, leaving behind a grieving family and a poem called “The Piper,” published all across Canada. The poem was L. M. Montgomery’s tribute to “In Flanders Field.”
Does everyone have one of these?
